Healthy Hot Chocolate – 4 Ways to Make it

Hot Chocolate.

Is there a better beverage after a long day or a skate or hike?

I love hunkering down in the winter time in front of a fireplace
and having a nice, warm mug of hot chocolate.

A typical Starbucks hot chocolate has over 10 teaspoons of sugar! (our daily limit of sugar recommended by the World Health Organization is 6 teaspoons of sugar)

So, how can we still have our cup of comfort WITHOUT all the added sugar and perhaps even have some added health benefits?

 

Healthy Hot Chocolate – 4 Different Ways

First, let’s try using maca! Maca is known to help increase energy and increase sex drive.

Culinarily speaking, when maca is combined with chocolate, it brings out the subtle caramel notes in maca.

Maca Madness Hot Chocolate

Health benefits: increased energy, libido and ability to handle stress

Serves 1

  • 1 cup of  almond milk, cashew milk or hemp milk
  • 1 tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of maca powder
  • 1 tablespoon of pure maple syrup or honey
  • ½ teaspoon each  coconut oil and vanilla
  • small pinch of sea salt

Add all of the ingredients to a blender and blend. Then add to a saucepan and bring to a simmer.

Orange Cinnamon Swirl Hot Chocolate

Health benefits: helps to balance blood sugar, source of iron and magnesium

Serves 1

  • 1 cup of  almond milk, cashew milk or hemp milk
  • 1-2 ounces of dark chocolate
  • 1/4 teaspoon each of grated orange peel and cinnamon
  • 1-2 teaspoons  of pure maple syrup
  • small pinch of Pink Himalayan sea salt

Add milk to a saucepan and bring to a simmer. Add in chocolate and start to stir, allowing to melt. Add in the rest of ingredients once the chocolate has started to melt.

Vanilla Maple Hot Chocolate

Health Benefits~ lower in sugar than traditional vanilla hot chocolate and added trace minerals from the Himalayan Sea Salt

 Serves 1
  • 1-2 ounces of dark chocolate
  •  1 1/2 cups of vanilla unsweetened almond or cashew milk
  • 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract
  • 1-2 teaspoons  of pure maple syrup
  • small pinch of Pink Himalayan sea salt
 Add milk to a saucepan and bring to a simmer. Add in chocolate and start to stir, allowing to melt. Add in the rest of ingredients once the chocolate has started to melt.

Coconut Cream Pie Hot Chocolate

Health Benefits: properties of coconut oil kill harmful bacteria and helps to boost metabolism.

Serves 1

  • 1 cup of  coconut milk ( full fat from a can)
  • 1 tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon of pure maple syrup
  • small pinch of Pink Himalayan sea salt

Add all of the ingredients to a blender and blend. Then add to a saucepan and bring to a simmer.

So there you have it – Healthy Hot Chocolate, 4 Different Ways!
